Ireland A on top after scoring 508-8 declared

Ireland A beaten in the first 4-day unofficial test by Sri Lanka A came back strongly in the second to post an imposing first innings total of 508-8 declared on the second day of the second unofficial test at Hambantota yesterday.

They finished the day on a high capturing the wicket of Sri Lanka A skipper Ashan Priyanjan off the last ball of the day for 27 to have Sri Lanka A struggling at 99 for three wickets by the close.

Sri Lanka A lost openers Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando cheaply to Craig Young to be 18-2 in the seventh over.

Priyanjan joined by Angelo Perera figured in a 81-run stand and looked like taking Sri Lanka A to the close without any further loss when the captain fell to part time bowler Jonathan Garth.

Perera who batted aggressively was unbeaten on 50 scored off 62 balls with seven fours.

Earlier Ireland A continuing from their overnight score of 286-4 ground the Sri Lanka A bowlers in a display of solid batting that saw them top the 500-run mark.

Wicket-keeper Lorcan Tucker and Neil Rock stretched their fifth wicket partnership to 163 with both scoring eighties. Tucker made 80 off 171 balls with eight fours and two sixes and Rock top scored with 85 off 198 balls with eight fours.

Following their dismissals a further stand of 108 followed for the Jonathan Garth (45) and James Cameron-Dow who played the dominant role with an unbeaten 76 not out off 95 balls (10 fours, I six) before the declaration.

Left-arm spinner Lasith Ambuldeniya who destroyed the Irish batting in the first unofficial test was made to work hard for his three wickets that cost 142 runs off 43 overs. Fast bowler Chamika Karunaratne ended with figures of 3 for 99.
