Grand start for 131st SL Amateur Golf C’ship

The second oldest Golf Championship in the world commenced at the Royal Colombo Golf Club, with over 75 participants in the Men’s Sri Lanka Amateur Golf Championship and the Sri Lanka Ladies Amateur Golf Championship, after a solemn Opening Ceremony, yesterday morning.

The Sri Lanka National Flag was hoisted by the President Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU) Rtd. Air Chief Marshall Harsha Abeywickrema, to the rendering of the National Anthem, followed by the Pakistan and Indian National flags and anthems.

Pakistan National Team comprised 2 Men and 2 Ladies who will challenge last years’ Ladies Champion Taniya Minel Balasuriya.

India will have two private entries, making a bid to retain the National Championship title for India, won by fellow countryman Druv Sheron in the 130th National Championship played at the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, defeating G P Sisira Kumara of Sri Lanka, Runner-up, in the last two years consecutively.

Sri Lanka ‘A’ Team will be represented by Sisira Kumara and J M D Indika, whilst B A Sanjeewa and youngster Januka Dilshan comprise Sri Lanka ‘B’.

The Amateur Golf Championships of Sri Lanka, represent a proud history and pride in the Asian Region and the Principal Sponsor of the 131st Championship and the Ladies Championship 2018, DSL – Continental Tyres, represented by Saroj Perera, Chairman Douglas & Sons Limited, hoisted the Sponsor ‘Continental’ flag, along with Avancka Herat, Captain Royal Colombo Golf Club who hoisted the host- club flag. Nishan Navaratne, Honorary Secretary SLGU, unfurled the Sri Lanka Golf Union flag.

The 131st Sri Lanka Amateur Golf Championship will be hard fought with Sisira Kumara, twice Runner-up in the last two years, expected to go one step further and be crowned Champion but the local challenge from Indika, Sanjeewa, Amarapadma, Navinda Ranga , RCGC Club Champion Sachin De Silva, Kushal Johnpillai and Rusi Captain the 14 time and defending RCGC Club Champion Rusi captain making a rare appearance, promising to make the 2018, 131st Championship a memorable event.

The 1st Qualifying Round Teed-off Sunday and the 2nd Round will be played this morning and the top 32 qualifiers who make the cut-off, will compete in the Match-play format on Tuesday, Wednesday and the final will be played on Thursday.

The 121st Sri Lanka Ladies Amateur Golf Championship 2018, will tee-off the Qualifying Round this morning and the top eight qualifiers will compete in the Match-play format to determine the winner.

Taniya Minel Balasuriya the defending Champion will be challenged by Kayla Perara, the Pakistan duo of Suneya Osama and Zaib Un Nisa, whilst the local challenge includes Nilo Jayathilake and Swen Selvaratnam.
