Lance Corporal E.A.N Dilshan and Corporal R.M.K.K.R Weerasinghe bagged the Best Sportsman and Best Para (disabled) Sportsman awards in the Sri Lanka Army Light Infantry Colours Award Nite held at the Defence Services College Auditorium on Tuesday evening.
Sri Lanka Army’s oldest regiment, Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) retained the Inter-Regiment Athletic Championship for the 14th time out of 53 occasions.
Lance Corporal Dilshan won many gold medals in karate (kata) segment local and international events while Corporal Weerasinghe won the gold medal in relay 100x4 event in the 2016 Asian Oceania Championship in Dubai. Also he bagged silver medals in 200m, 400m and 800m events in the Army Para Athletic Championships. Of those 153 SLLI recipients of ‘Colours’ during the glittering ‘Colours Night’ ceremony, headed by Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army on the invitation of the SLLI Colonel of the Regiment, Major General Amal Karunasekara, a total of 80 sportsmen were chosen to receive ‘Army Colours’ in the same event. Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake congratulated all 80 recipients of ‘Army Colours’ at the grand ceremony, and finally awarded the special trophies to Best Sportsmen of the SLLI.
General (Retd) Shantha Kottegoda, a former Commander of the Army also joined in the presentation of ‘Colours’ to the recipients.
Dananjani Karunasekara, Chairperson, SLLI Seva Vanitha Unit, Retired Senior Officers and Other Rankers were present on the occasion.
