Salt, Najibullah steer Dambulla Giants to win

Two half centuries hit by Phil Salt (62) and Najibullah Zadran (54) as Dambulla Giants notched up a 18-run win over Colombo Stars in their LPL cricket fixture played at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium yesterday.

Colombo Stars chasing a target of 196 runs were all out for 177 in 18.5 overs.

Dambulla Giants who lost to Jaffna Kings in their previous game made a good come back with a superb batting display to score 195 for 6 wickets which was a big challenge for opponents. Dinesh Chandimal top scored 26 in 16 balls hitting two fours and two sixes for Colombo Stars while Paceman Nuwan Pradeep was the pick of the bowlers who finished with 3 for 50. Spinners Tharindu Ratnayake and Imran Thahir took two wickets each.

Earlier, Dambulla Giants openers Phil Salt and Niroshan Dikwella made a quick start with adding 57 runs in just 3.3 overs. Phil Salt the 25 year old North Wales batter played three ODI’ s for England was in more aggressive mood while making shots all over the ground to complete his second half century just in 22 balls which also the fastest half century so far in this tournament. The Caribbean paceman Kimo Paul made the first breakthrough to depart Dickwella with a superb catch by skipper Dhananjaya de Silva at cover position.

Afghan all rounder Najibullah Zadran joined with Salt to make a 31-run fourth-wicket combination while Salt who scored 62 in 34 balls hitting eight fours and two sixes was out in the 11th over being bowled by paceman Dushmantha Chameera who finished with best figures of 3 for 34.

Zadran the left hander scored 54 in 40 balls hit six fours and two sixes while Skipper Dasun Shanaka made 38 in 25 balls struck three fours and two sixes also made 77 runs best combination of the match for the fifth wicket to get a creditable total of 195 for six wickets which was the highest team total so far in this tournament.

The opener Phil Salt was named Man of the Match for his brisk knock of 62.
