Vidyartha College, which has produced top ruggerites in the past has started training. There are over twenty five players at training. The school and the old boys rugby wing are giving their fullest support to keep the rugb flag flying like in the past. This time too they are coached by their old boy Danushka Pushpakumara Rajamanthri a fine player who played for the school in all age groups, under 13 to 19 from 1993 to 2002 and led all the sides.
After school he played for Kandy SC, CR & FC and Sri Lanka.After saying good bye as a player took up coaching and has done well and has been coaching his school since 2017 and sure to build up a good side. . Known as Tigers they have not only produced top teams and but also some of the finest players for club and National rugby. One of the first in the rugby field to hit the top was T.B. Wijesinghe who learnt his rugby at this school and soon after school played for Kandy Lake Club, and then joined CR & FC and became the first from this school to play for the country. .
KDCA qualifying cricket tournament
Kandy District Cricket Association are doing their best with limited facilities to keep the game going and helping clubs to play the game. In the A and B qualifying tournament which was started early this year but had to be halted due to the present situation. Up to yesterday they have played nine matches out of 59. They have to play 25 matches in the Group “A” and “B”.
Football in Kandy in the doldrums
Football was known to be the poor man’s game, but today the game seems to be dying a natural death in Kandy. Today Kandy’s club football is on the decline. The newly elected president of the Football controlling body should give his best for Kandy football and hope the game will be revived and brought back to its former position,
The last time when Kandy football flourished was during the time of B.M. Liyanage’s leadership as president and H Marikar was the Vice President. M.Nadaraja secretary and T. Kumala Mohamed Coach. For the first time Kandy became Inter club league champions in 1992 and also made its first overseas tour.
KMC Play grounds and community centre six a side cricket
The much anticipated six-a-side soft ball cricket tournament is being organized by the Kandy Municipal Council Playgrounds department,. This is an annual tournament participated by some up and coming cricketers where the champions will receive the Mayor’s Cup. according to K. Darmarathne the chief of the play grounds department all arrangements have been made and nearly forty teams will be seen in action, with the backing of the Mayor Kessra Senanayake,
Cue sport to be revived in Kandy
Today cue sport in Kandy has taken a nose dive. There are no tournaments unlike in the past, In the early days there were inter-club matches between Kandy clubs and also against Colombo clubs. The clubs were CYO - Catholic Club, Lawn Club, Public Service Club , Mahanuwara YMBA, Kandy YMMA, Kandy Garden Club, Peradeniya Faculty Club, Kings Cue Club. However, there is a ray of hope amid dark clouds as past cue veterans are drawing up elaborate plans to take the sport which produced Sri Lanka’s first world champion, to great heights.
The most looked forward to event was the Kandy District ‘Lanka Plate’ Billiards and Snooker championships. From Kandy M.J. Marzook Wahid a product of Mahaiyawa went on to represent SriLanka at the World Billiards championships in Canada and was the first to represent the country from Kandy.
