It’s time to tip our hats to Kandy rugby products who are today coaches of the countries national sevens men and women’s teams, that is the two famous Kandy products in the field of rugby, Nilufer Ibrahim and Saliya Kumara who are in charge as coachers of the men’s and women’s teams for the Asia Rugby Men’s and Women’s Sevens tournament in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. This tournament will be held in the United Arab Emirates on November 19 and 20. And both flew with the team yesterday with the teams. This rugby event will act as Asian Qualifiers for the Rugby World Cups 7’ 2022 to be held in South Africa and as a ranking tournament for the Asian Games 2022 which will be held in Hangzhou – China next year. So this year it is going to be an interesting tournament with top 8 Men’s and 8 Women’s Sevens teams coached by two Kandy school products. These two good coaches will set the environment, the platform to launch off. These two coaches understand players and they’ve got to be integrated, feel comfortable, and understand their role. The relationship between a player and coach now is driven by feedback and communication. This is the first time that the two national sevens coaches are appointed from one city.
Nilufer Ibrhaim former Kingswood College rugegrite who has vast experience in coaching. His first club was Kandy Sports Club for which club he gave his best as a player and helped the club to earn a name. Later gave his best in coaching schools, clubs, and the Sri Lanka national sides. In coaching, he gave his best and produced some top players at Dharmaraja, Kingswood, Trinity, Isipathana, St. Joseph’s. He also helped the Hambantota Sharks, Navy, and Army in a big way in coaching. The players he coached both at school and club level are doing well in the game.
Saliya Kumara started his rugby at Vidyartha and later played for Trinity is a hard-working rugby coach. At club level, he first played for the side and played for the country. In 2003, he played for the Sri Lanka Youth team and from 2006 he was a regular for the Sri Lanka Sevens and fifteen a side teams. After hanging up his boots in 2015 he started coaching Vidyartha College and at one time Kandy Sports Club. He also helped Trinity College in coaching. He is an expert in the Sevens format.
