Sri Lanka to host Inaugural Asia Cup Rugby 7s

Asia Rugby has offered Sri Lanka the opportunity of hosting the Inaugural Asia Cup Rugby Sevens Tournament as Sri Lanka’s Sports Minister, Namal Rajapaksa, had shown a keen interest in it. This was disclosed, to Daily News Sports recently, by Asia Rugby President Qais Al Dhalai.

“We are glad to offer the Lankans and their Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa the hosting of the inaugural Asia Cup Rugby Sevens in Sri Lanka for which the Minister has shown great interest.”

According to Al Dhalai, there are 35 countries under his wing and he anticipates creating a healthy competition among them. “We expect at least 20 countries to participate in this inaugural tournament. Sri Lanka will be an ideal location to host it,” said Al Dhalai.

The ARF chief, who is very keen to start up the game in his region, applauded the keenness and efforts of Sports Minister Rajapaksa to restart the game in the country. “When we made this proposal to Minister Namal, he was very keen to host this event. Therefore, we decided to offer the hosting of the tournament to Sri Lanka and it will be an iconic event in the Asia Rugby calendar.”

Asia Rugby expects this tournament to be held between August and September and intends to stage it at least once in two years. The idea behind organising this event is to popularise the game among all countries in the continent and get more and more people handling the oval shaped ball.
