Ranindu and Susal clash in men's final

The reigning National Chess champion Ranindu Liyanage of Ananda College and 15-year-old promising player Susal De Silva of Nalanda College qualified for the men’s final after they beat Isuru Alahakoon and CMS Praneith Kumara at the Online National Chess Championship which is now in progress.

Ranindu beat Isuru 2-0 while Susal beat Praneith 2-0 convincingly in the semi finals to enter the final. At the Consolation finals, Isuru Alahakoon of Sri Lanka Navy will meet CMS Praneeth Kumara of USJP Chess Club. Meanwhile, Probhodi Wijesinghe of Sabaragamuwa University and Sanudula Dahamdi of Musaeus College excelled in the women's semi finals to enter the final. Probodhi was able to beat H.M.R.M.K Rathnayake of St. Joseph's

Balika Vidyalaya, Kegalle while Sanudula defeated Chanindi Attanayake of Devi Balika Vidyalaya convincingly int the semifinals. Probhodi has scored full 2 points out of 2 while Sanudula had a win and a draw collecting 1.5 points out of 2 games to enter the final with good performances.

The Inaugural Sri Lanka Online National Chess Championships 2021 is conducted by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL). The event was held in four stages while Novices Division was held in 7 regions, Major division in 6 regions, and premier Division as qualification for the final stage.The Premier Division was held with the best 16 players on a round-robin basis (15 rounds) to find the four semi finalists.

A total prize of Rs. 180,000 is offered by CFSL. The top players will be selected for the Sri Lanka National Online Chess team for next year. (D.R.)
