To captain a team in a major rugby tournament is a great honour, one of the finest back division players Nigel Ratwatte was named captain for the coming season of Kandy Sports Club at the AGM held on Sunday.
Nigel Ratwatte is an intelligent three-quarter, possessing the strength and skill to dominate the game. An excellent ball handler, thinker and play maker. His overall abilities, combined with his inspirational leadership and outstanding sportsmanship makes him a fine ruggerite. He has represented the country in both rugby sevens and fifteen a side. He is a ruggerite who can play as full-back, fly Half and Centre three quarter. He learnt his rugby at Trinity College and was able to lead the under-13 team in 2004 and showed much promise and was adjudged the best place kicker in this age group that year.
Then his parents took off to Mauritius, where he polished his rugby and played for St. Nicholas’s Grammar school and later for Black River Club. In 2007 he was selected to play for the national under 18 team during a tour to Madagascar. At 18 years was picked for the national side of Mauritius. After coming back to Sri Lanka he played for CR & FC in 2009 and 2010 Then he crossed over to Up-Country Lions R.C. of Nawalapitiya. And after this club gave up the game he joined Kandy SC.
In 2012 he made his international debut with the Sri Lanka national side, competing in the HSBC Asian Sevens tournament. For his good work he was appointed KandySC captain in 2020 but in the year 2021 there was no rugby,
Fazil Marija one of the finest rugby players was named the head coach, he is a former national rugby player is a knowledgeable rugby coach. He mastered his rugby skills at Kingswood College. He represented his school teams from Under 13 to Under 20. He played for 1st XV in 2003 as a fly half, and went on to play well and helped the team emerge unbeaten triple champions in 2004. As the captain of Kingswood College 1st XV, he became the best Schoolboy player in the Singer International 7’s tournament and also in the Golden Key Schools 7’s tournament, in which Kingswood College won both Championships under his captaincy. He first played for the Sri Lanka under 19 in 2000. In the year 2004 he played for Kandy SC and captained in 2010 and 2015.
