The most successful Para swimmer of all time, Brazil’s Daniel Dias, has gone into retirement after finishing fourth in the men’s 50m freestyle S5 on Day 8 at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games yesterday.
The 33-year-old had already won a staggering 27 Paralympic medals, including 14 Golds, before he dived in for his sixth and final race of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
His haul also includes the three Bronze medals he notched up in Japan’s capital.
Dias narrowly missed out on a fourth Bronze Medal after finishing in 32.12s, which was just behind China’s Wang Lichao, who came third in 31.35s.
Wang’s compatriots Zheng Tao claimed Gold in 30.31s, to set a Paralympic record and Yuan Weiyi took Silver in 31.11s.
When Dias announced in January that he planned to retire after the Games he said that he wanted the occasion to be a ‘moment of great joy’. And that is what he received. (Agencies)
