India start steady in tough conditions

Rohit Sharma plays a shot

In tough conditions, under overcast skies, Rohit Sharma (35 not out) and K. L. Rahul (10 not out) walked off unbeaten with India on 46 for no loss at lunch on the opening day of the second Test against England at Lord’s yesterday.

England will be hugely disappointed after not making the conditions count and getting the early breakthroughs they would have hoped for.

The opening stand is now the highest for a side put into bat since Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook made 114 against South Africa in 2008.

Soon after England won the toss, both Joe Root and Virat Kohli acknowledged they wanted to bowl first. England got that opportunity but failed to make it count.

Chief scores

India: 46/0 at lunch (Rohit Sharma 35 n.o) vs England
