India set out on the path of a late recovery in the Headingley Test by taking out both the well-set English openers in a slow-moving morning session on Day 2 in Leeds yesterday.
By lunch, Dawid Malan overcame a nervy start and in the company of his Captain Joe Root, stretching England's lead to 104 with eight wickets in hand.
Mohammad Shami got India the first breakthrough as he put an end to the 135-run record setting opening stand with the wicket of Rory Burns.
He got one to nip back into the batsman and sneak through the bat-pad gap to crash into his off-stump when England had added only 15 runs to their overnight score of 120 for no loss in the first half an hour of play.
Under overcast conditions, Haseeb Hameed and comeback man Malan spent most of the next hour negotiating a much more disciplined bowling effort as compared to the one last evening despite the noticeable absence of swing.
