We are still searching for right combination - Mickey Arthur

Sri Lanka played their first Intra-Squad practice match on Wednesday

Sri Lanka Head Coach Mickey Arthur said yesterday that they are looking at the right combination to compete against England during the Twenty20 International series, which begins next week.

“This is a start of a long journey for us and we hope that we will get the right combination and we want to improve the players’ skill level and to get them to compete internationally.”

Arthur said that the cancellation of the two tour games have not really worried them as the players have been training regularly at the Old Trafford Grounds.

“We have worked extremely hard since arriving at Old Trafford and having a squad of 24 players is an advantage as we can always have competitive games against each other.”

Sri Lanka played their first Intra-Squad practice match on Wednesday and will play their second practice match on Friday before heading to Cardiff for the opening T20I against England on June 23.

“It was encouraging to see the players going head-to-head during a very good competitive practice match yesterday (Wednesday) and this training block has been really good for us.”

“It is a massive challenge for our young team but it is also an opportunity for the players to shine against the number one ranked team,” Arthur emphasised.

“Although England have not played together in the recent past, all their top players are currently involved in the domestic tournament.”

“We want to have a settled batting order during this series and we would like to see each player performing his role to the maximum.”

“For me, the key is to create consistency in each position as we can’t be chopping and changing the players regularly,” he explained.

“We got to identify the best player in each area and we got to back them for a good period so that they would deliver the goods at the correct time.”

“Consistency in selection and consistency in game plan will help the players to deliver their best,” he added.
