U. H. Sugath - a talented swimming coach in Kandy

U. H. Sugath is a talented swimming coach who had his primary education at Polhena Maha Vidyalaya and his secondary education at St. Thomas’ College, Matara.

He started swimming at the age of five years under Coach Siripala Kodikara at the Polhena Water Sports Club and continued further training under K. W. Yasaratne, a veteran swimming coach.

Sugath has participated in two-mile, six-mile and 2km swimming meets for several years and has secured many titles during his career.

Sugath has also participated in several international events including the Pacific

Swimming Meet in 1992 and at the 1998 World Games held in New Zealand.

He was the Assistant Swimming Coach at Trinity College and after some time, he joined Mahamaya Girls’ School, Kandy in 2000 as the Head Coach.

He helped Mahamaya to become Sri Lanka Schools’ swimming champions for 20 successive years.

In addition, he helped Mahamaya to win the pentathlon championship for 16 years and the Junior Nationals on eight occasions and the Short Pool National Championship seven times.

Under his guidance Mahamaya also won the National Long Pool Championship on eight occasions, two-mile sea swim three times, and the National Championship on 15 occasions.

He was felicitated by the Mahamaya Girls’ School and was presented with a memento by the Principal for his outstanding coaching achievements.
