Sri Lanka makes winning start at Asian Chess Tourney

The national champion Ranindu Liyanage of Ananda College and Susal de Silva of Nalanda College began their campaign for the Asian Zonal Hybrid Chess Championship on a winning note yesterday.

Liyanage recorded a victory over Ahmed Awais while 15-year-old Susal beat Anis Ur Rehman both from Pakistan.

Meanwhile, 19 players shared one point each after the first-round while Sri Lanka’s Buddika Amarasinghe lost his first game to a higher rated FIDE Master Rahman Syad of Bangladesh.

The Sri Lankan players are competing from the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka Headquarters in Gangodawila, Nugegoda.

A total of 39 players from Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Maldives, Bhutan and Sri Lanka are participating in this event, conducted by the Bangladesh Chess Federation. (D.R)
