Pasindu Madushan an athlete par excellence

Athlete, record breaker in the 400 metres under 14 age group at the John Tarbet Meet in 2014 Pasindu Madushan Senanayake has brought honour and fame to one of the prestigious Catholic Educational Institutions in the island St. Benedict’s College Kotahena. He was born on 2nd January 2002 and initially admitted to Roman Catholic School Maththumagala in 2008 and his first class teacher was Mrs. Siriyawathi. From his smaller days he was interested in studies and did not take any interest in sports his parents who are devout Catholics Ranjith Senanayake and Mary Vimala decided to hand over their son to Samagi Athletic Club in 2012 and he came under his first coach Eric Newton and commenced practices at Nawaloka Grounds.

Same year he participated in Inter Academy Athletic Meets and he won places in the under 11 age group in 75 and 80 metres and in the following year competing in the School Sports Meet in the under 12 age group he swept the board in 100 and 200 and Long Jump and became the Champion and participating in the Circuit, Zonal and Provincial Meets he won 200 meteres event. His teacher in Charge for athletics was Mrs. Shamani Fernando. Same year he was drafted to Seventh Day Adventist School and the then Principal was Samarakoon Bandara and came under Mr. Sarath and Miss. Vigneshwaran Shamila Madumali the Coach and the Assistant Coach respectively.

In the same year he was the Under 13 Champion winning the 100, 200 and Long Jump Events and representing the school at the Divisional and Zonal Meets he swept the board in his events and did not take part in the Provincial Meet and in the next year too he swept the board at the school athletic meet and became under 13 Champion and in the Lower Tournaments too and became the Champion and participating in the 400 metres at the Provincial Tournament he was placed 4th and in the John Tarbet Met he set a new record in the under 14 age group 400 metre event by clocking 47.6 seconds and he was the School Under 15 Champion by winning his three pet events and in the Provincial Meet he was third in 400 metres and in the All Island he became 6th and in 2015 Bens were the John Tarbet Champions and Nuwan Abewardene and I. D. Pemasiri were the Masters in Charge of sports. They came first in 200 metres and 4x100 and they won a Gold Medal and second in 4x400 Relay Event.

He was the Vice Captain of School Athletic Team in 2020 and Bens were the John Tarbet Champions and at the 2016 Schools Sports Meet he came second in 100 and first in 400 and 200 events and he was the Champion and in the Circuit Meet he came second in 100 and first in 200 and 400 and in the Zonal too he won two events and in the John Tarbet 4x400 relay event they came fourth and they were the All Island Runners Up. Then in the Relay Carnival he won the 100 metres and at the 4x400 they were placed fifth and in 2018 he was the school under 16 Champion and in 200 and 400 metres he came second in the Zonal and their relay team came first and they were the All Round Champions.

At the Senior Tarbet Championship he came second in 200 metres in 2018. Senior 2018 Meet and his school team came second in 4x400 metres and second in 4x100 metres and he came second in 200 metres and he was placed sixth and they were the Senior All Round Runners Up and in the Relay Carnival they were third in 4x100 metres and Rev. Brother Praveen Dilshan is the Prefect of Games. Their former Principal Reverend Brother Henry Dissanayake extended his fullest support and he was at the helm of the school and the present Principal Rev, Brother Pubudu Rajapakse too is supporting him at all times.
