Lakshan suffers injury scare ahead of England T20I series

Dhananjaya Lakshan

The Sri Lanka Cricket Team suffered a minor setback when Dhananjaya Lakshan suffered an injury to his right knee while fielding during a training session on June 14 at Old Trafford in Manchester.

The 22-year-old uncapped all-rounder will undergo rehabilitation and did not take part in the first practice game at the Old Trafford Grounds yesterday.

He has also been ruled out of the second Intra-Squad practice match, which is scheduled for June 18 at the same venue. Lakshan was considered as a bright prospect for Sri Lanka in the shortest format of the game and was well set to make his Twenty20 International debut during the series against England.

The T20I series between Sri Lanka and England will commence with back-to-back matches on June 23 and 24 at Cardiff while the third T20I is scheduled for June 26 at Southampton.

The left-hand batsman and the right-arm paceman was a revelation during the inaugural Lanka Premier League (LPL) T20 Tournament and he was also outstanding during the recent domestic cricket tournament.

Earlier, the former Captain of Richmond College was forced to skip the Bangladesh series after he was tested positive for COVID-19 and was shaping up well to make his T20I debut.

Lakshan of course, had really worked hard to make it to the national team and was one of the star players at the Abu Dhabi T10 Tournament where he represented the champion Northern Warriors Team.

That was also the first time that he had played in an overseas Franchise League Tournament.

“I always believe that bowlers should be able to find a way to bounce back in tough situations and a bowler can be a match winner if the skills are properly executed,” Lakshan said after the tournament.
