Sumudu Pradeep - an outstanding Sri Lankan powerlifter

Thirty-two-year-old Sumudu Pradeep is an outstanding powerlifter who became the first Sri Lankan to win the 59kg event at the Asian Pacific Classics Powerlifting Contest held at Gold Coast, Australia in 2019.

Pradeep started weightlifting under the coaching of Athula Wijewickrema, talented weightlifter cum coach at the YMCA, Kandy in 2010 and he changed into powerlifting in the following year.

After joining the Army, he showed his real talent and he was unbeaten in his weight class of 59kg from 2011 up to date.

In 2016, he established two Sri Lanka records at the National Powerlifting contest held at the Maithree Hall, Bandaragama.

During a period of 10 years of powerlifting, Pradeep has renewed 21 Sri Lanka records and established four new records in 2016 at the powerlifting meet held at Bandaragama. The records established were 192.05kg in squat, 117.5kg in bench press and 225kg in deadlift with a full total of 535kgs.

He renewed these records in 2017 at a meet held at the same venue. His present Sri Lanka records are squat 205kgs, bench press 125kgs, deadlift 225.5kgs and altogether a total of 555.5kgs in the 59kg weight class.
