“Sports are an essential tool for school children to succeed in their future activities,” Secretary, Department of Education, Ranjith Yapa stated recently.
“Sports are not merely an assessment to try out one's physical strength but it is also well associated with so many good qualities such as facing challenges bravely, endurance, team spirit, togetherness, unity and accepting both victory and defeat equally,” he explained.
Yapa made these observations while addressing school children, parents and athletes at the Southern Province Sports Colours Awards Ceremony held at the Rabindranath Tagore Hall of the Ruhuna University in Matara. “We, as responsible authorities in the Education Department have provided an opportunity to all school children to engage in whatever sport and encourage them to march forward until they reach national and international level,” he stated.
“Involving in sports events help students to build up unwavering personalities to face any challenges in their life and the discipline that is created through sports will surely play a vital role in moulding a good character,” he emphasised.
“That's why the government has introduced sports/physical education and health science for Advanced Level students in view of assisting the schoolchildren to obtain educational scholarships and to move forward in sports,” he stressed.
“Many sports development programmes have been in operation by the government today for schoolchildren to develop their sporting potential and abilities,” he commented.
“We clearly see that sports are a helpful device for the school children to make their future life successful and I should say that once again, with my own experiences,” he added.
