Shiran Fernando tests positive for COVID-19

Shiran Fernando

Sri Lanka Bowling Coach Chaminda Vaas, all-rounder Isuru Udana and fast bowler Shiran Fernando tested positive at the first PCR test ahead of the first One Day International (ODI) against Bangladesh yesterday.

The trio had undergone a second test and reports from the second test yesterday indicated that only Fernando is affected and has to be self-isolated.

“We were informed by the team management that the second PCR test cleared Vaas and Udana while Fernando showed positive,” SLC Chief Executive Officer Ashley de Silva told the Daily News yesterday.

“The two Sri Lankan team doctors are working closely with the support of the Health Authorities in Bangladesh to decide the plight of Fernando,” he said.

“Nevertheless, the tour will proceed as scheduled without any interruption,” de Silva added.

Earlier, there was a scare that the tour might have to be cut short if the second PCR test was positive for all three Sri Lanka players.

Fernando had tested positive prior to being selected for the tour and had undergone a 14-day quarantine process as per Health Ministry guidelines and only after he was cleared with another PCR test that he was selected.

The two Sri Lankan team doctors have kept him under frequent observation and are likely to decide the next stage of action in due course.
