State Minister of Rural and School Sports Infrastructure Improvement Thenuka Vidanagamage said that the monthly nutrition allowance provided to school athletes will be increased to Rs. 10,000 in the near future.

Minister Vidanagamage said that for the first time in Sri Lanka's history, the portfolio of sports has been entrusted to an active sportsman and as a result sports at all levels would benefit.

He added that under the guidance of Minister Namal Rajapaksa the number of sports schools in the island has been increased. The State Minister said that at the moment, the infrastructure facilities provided to most sports schools are under utilised due to the lack of trained coaching staff and the inability of most parents to provide sufficient nutrition. Vidanagamage said that all shortcomings faced by school athletes would be addressed by the end of this year.
