Janaka Pathirana-Sri Lanka Cricket controlling club representative

Kandy’s Janaka Pathirana has been elected by Sri Lanka Cricket as one of the controlling club representatives. This is the first time that a Kandy man has been elected to this position. Janaka a cricket lover and promoter is a product of St. Sylvester’s College and later played for Kandy Youth CC.

At present he is Secretary of Central Province Cricket Association and Kandy District Cricket Association. He gave a big hand for Kandy’s cricket promotion last year, with the help of president Shammi Silva, where he got side wickets for schools, cricket gear and also matting wickets.

So, he is sure to give a big hand for Kandy cricket. His son Sachith Shanaka Pathirana was a top cricketer and now he is involved in coaching.

Kavinda Secretary again

Kavinda Jayasena was a top star in the rugby firmament. He is all-out to give his best. He is the son of famous ruggerite late George Jayasena a product of Vidyartha College. Kavinda, a product of Trinity College represented his school at all age groups (13, 15, 17 & 1stXV) and at club level. He represented Havelock Sports Club captained the side in 2008 and 2011.

In the year 2003 he came back to his town where he learnt the game and played for Kandy SC in 2003. At national level, represented the Sri Lanka Youth team in 1999, then in 2001 played for the Sri Lanka team in the world cup-qualifying matches held in Kazakhsztan

In 2002 he played for the Sri Lanka team at the 18th Asiad held in Bangkok and was also a member of the Lankan team for the annual Singer Sevens. He also represented the Chennai Rugby Football team in the All India Rugby tournament 2007-2008 held in Mumbai.

His professional achievements are - IRB Level One (1) Coaching , IRB LevelOne (2) Coaching , IRB Level One 7 A side Coaching IRBQualified Match Commissioner and also successfully completed IRB Level One (1),Level Two (2) and Level 1, 7-a-side coaching programme which includes. the IRB Rugby Ready - Laws of the Game, IRB Strength and Conditioning Level 1,Concussion Management and Strength and conditioning Pre-Level 1 and 2.

He was team manager Havelock Sports Club in 2013 & 2015 seasons, coached Lanka Hospitals Rugby team for the Mercantile Rugby 7s from 2012 to 2014. High Performance Team Manager Sri Lanka Rugby 2018. Team Manager Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel Eagles Rugby team for Sri Lanka Super 7s Rugby tournament which emerged Cup Champions in 2016 and 2017.

Last years committee was retained,with only a committee member Major Kanishka Ambyabgala stepping down. Pradeep Basnayake remains as president and the hard working Secretary Kavinda Jayasena is back in the seat is all out to give his best.

Kandy still talks about Gamini Fernando

Kandy’s rugby lovers still talk about Gamini Fernando’s rugby, who was residing at Lake road Katukelle was one of the top ruggerites to come out of Trinity College., There have been many greats in rugby from Kandy and one of the stars of yesteryear was Gamini Fernando who is a long standing member of the Havelock SC, the club he joined straight from school..

Gamini was one of the finest forwards the country has seen on the rugby field during his playing days and had the unique achievement of being a member of the Clifford Cup winning team of Havelock SC on his debut in club rugby, later as the captain and coach of the club.

Known in rugby circles as Gamma, he was an outstanding flank forward and had the rare distinction of refereeing a match between the French University and London RFC in 1979, the first time two European teams played in Sri Lanka .He is a product of Trinity College where he excelled in rugby and also played cricket. He was a player of the first under 17 team in 1956.

He won his colours in rugby in 1959. After leaving school he joined Havelock SC in 1961and led the club in 1967 and in 1969 hung p his boots. He represented Low Country in the Gratiaen cup, All Ceylon in the All India tournament in 1966 and 67. He was a fine team man and as a coach always taught players to enjoy themselves and play good clean hard rugby,

Kandy’s boys and girls schools gave their best for hockey

Hockey in Kandy dates as far back as 1907 when the Indian Rajput Regiments occupied the Kandy Military Barracks,currently known as Police Ground. It is said that the first “Bully Off” in Kandy was in 1907 at the Bogambara Ground, when the two clubs Kandy Sports Club and Industrial School Team met. During that time St. Anthony’s College was housed at the present St. Sylvester’s College premises and they used the Military barracks square for all their sports.

In 1926, Kandy Sports Club started a tournament and special mention must be made of John Jackson Smale, Harmer,Trailm Mclaughlanm, the Bengan brothers B and R, the Trinity master K.R.Pilcher (Oxford Blue) and Strefield (English County player).

Then in the 1930s, the game came back with people like P.T. Rajan, M.S. Jainudeen. V.D.Paul and J.O. Mendis playing the game. At that time only a handful of clubs showed interest. As the years rolled by hockey flourished in Kandy with several schools in and around Kandy taking to the game.

During the World War a large number of clubs and schools including foreign teams played in Kandy. Hockey in Kandy was well organized with local tournaments in full swing. In1944, the Kandy District Hockey Association conducted one of its finest tournaments where 14 teams participated in the league.

Sunrice F & AC football promoter Naufer no more

M.I.M.Naufer, the man who gave a big hand for Sunrise F & AC passed away few days back over here in Kandy.

He was the first Treausurer of the Sunrise F & AC who held the post for over forty years, and gave a big support to this club. He is a product of Camas College Kandy where he played football and was a knowledgeable footballer during his days who, played for Young Stars SC. He left his wife Ameena sons Rifaz, Rizwan, duagthers Rizana and Riza. His Janaza took place according to health guidelines
