Dilshan Maheesha Dabarera outstanding chess player

Chess Player, member of the World Youth Chess team in Greece and Asian Youth Team tour of Thailand Dilshan Maheesha Dabarera has brought honour and immense glory to his Alma Mater Maliyadewa College, Kurunegala and his motherland.

Dilshan was born on 10th January 2004 and he was admitted to Maliyadewa College in 2010 when R. M. M. Ratnayake was at the helm of the school and his first class teacher was Mrs. Ramya Gunathilake.

When he was in Grade Two in 2011 his parents Neil Dabarera and Sandya Kuruppuarachchi handed over their son to the school Chess Coach Nuwan Liyanage and the teacher in Charge of Chess was Mrs. Padeniya and at the Inter House Chess Tournaments Dilshan participated and impressed and at the under eight age group he won at the Divisional, District, Provincial level and also at the All Island Schools Tournament and he repeated the same result at the under 10 and 12 tournaments.

In 2018 at the All Island Youth Meet held in Colombo he was the under 14 Champion and this enabled him to earn a place for the Asian Youth Team in Thailand and he was named as the Official Player of the Contingent and 70 players participated for his age group and he was not successful but it was a fine exposure for Dilshan and with these performances and experience under his belt he was a unanimous choice for the World Youth Chess Championship held in Greece and there were 60 participants and his rating was increased by 150 points.

After returning to the island at the All Island Schools Meet he was the under 15 Champion where 400 competitors participated and in the following year at the All Island Youth under 16 age group he was the Runner Up and in 2020 at the National All Island Open Championship held in Colombo out of 14 finalists he came seventh. His school coach is Niranga Kandearachchi and he is attending private coaching under Nuwan Liyanage and his teacher in Charge of Chess is Mrs. Chamali and the Prefect of Games is Mr. Chalinda. He captained the school under 15 and 17 teams and his Principal Saman Indrarathne is supportive of him at all times.
