Centuries by Hirantha and Diniru highlights of drawn encounter

Centuries by Hirantha Lakshan (St Thomas) and Diniru Abeywickremasinghe (St Servatius) were the highlight of the 121st edition of Ruhuna’s Battle of the Blues between St Servatius College and St Thomas College Matara which ended in a draw at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium in Sooriyawewa on Saturday.

Hirantha Lakshan scored 127 runs off 163 balls with a dozen boundaries and a six for the Thomians while Diniru Abeywickremasinghe scored an unbeaten 103 off 168 balls with ten hits to the ropes in the Servatian second innings.

The Thomians electing to bowl first had the Servatians on 117/7 but a 103 run 8th wicket stand between Kushan Wijerama (70) and skipper Madishan de Silva (38) took them to a respectable 253.

In reply the Thomians were 202/3 at stumps on day two after rain put an end to the post tea session and declared their first essay at 312/8 three overs after lunch on day three. Hirantha Lakshan scored 127 runs off 163 balls with a dozen boundaries and a six while Nipun Samarasinghe supported him with a patient 59 off 132 balls with five hits to the ropes. The duo figured in a 151 run fourth wicket stand.

The Servatians put on a better performance in their second essay and were 170/2 at the close of play. In addition to Diniru’s unbeaten 103 Pasindu Madawa scored 20 runs while Chirath Neththaru was unbeaten on 25. A total of 735 runs were scored while only 20 wickets fell in the eight sessions of play possible in this encounter. Pradeep Udawaththa and Deepal Gunawardena officiated while Leelananda Kumarasiri was SLSCA’s match commissioner.The official scorers were Hemantha Kapuduwa and Kamantha Wickramasekera
