Sri Lanka to focus on 2026 Youth Olympics

The newly appointed Junior National Sports Development Committee will have the prime task of focusing on the 2026 Youth Olympic Games to be held in Senegal.

The Ministry of Sports and the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOCSL) have formed this Committee to spot talented athletes and to groom them for major international events.

Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa and Education Minister Professor G. L. Peiris have approved this nine-member Committee which is headed by Shirantha Pieris, president of the Rifle Association.

The main duty of this new Committee is to select talented Under-18 athletes from Schools Sports Associations and train them to win more medals at international events.

Providing financial assistance, nutrition facilities, physical and mental fitness development, foreign coaches, and preparing the athletes to compete in world ranking tournaments are some of the responsibilities of this committee.

The Junior National Sports Development Committee: Shirantha Pieris (Chairman), Fazeel Hussain (Secretary), Sujani Bonalagama, Upali Amarathunga, J. M Prabath, Iqbal Bin Issac, Nilu Jayatilleka, Dimuth Gunawardena and Jayalal Ratnasuriya.
