SLC conducts 2km-run fitness test for National players

Players were given a target of running the 2km distance in eight minutes and 35 seconds.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) conducted the 2km run fitness test for the National players to ascertain their fitness levels at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo yesterday.

Accordingly, 32 players out of the 36-member provisional squad training for the Tour of the West Indies participated in the test.

According to the new test, players were given a target of running the 2km distance within a time frame of eight minutes and 35 seconds.

However, Kusal Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva, Avishka Fernando, and Lahiru Thirimanne did not take part in the fitness test owing to different reasons. “Going forward, we will adjust the scores as we get better and become world-class. The bowlers, batsmen, wicketkeepers will be given different time targets,” said Grant Luden, Physical Performance Manager of SLC.

“If a player fails, he can do another test within 40 days; our idea is to achieve the minimum fitness standards before the T20 World Cup, which will be played later this year,’’ added Luden. The results of the fitness test will be notified to the Cricket Selection Committee.
