Silum Nethmitha -outstanding karateka, athlete and swimmer

Karate Gold Medalist, Athlete and Swimmer. Silum Nethmitha Gunawardene has brought honour and glory to his Alma Mater St. Joseph Vaz College Wennappuwa. His first school was Aswadduma Subarathi Vidyalaya Kuliyapitiya from Grade 1 to 5 and from there he shifted to Kuliyapitiya Central College in 2014 and he was there for two years and participated in the Inter House Sports Meet in under 11 and 12 age groups and his events were 100, 400 and 4x100 Relay and won places and he commenced karate under Peter Perera.

His first Karate Tournament was the All Island 38th Kumite Championship in 2013 and he won a Silver in Kumite in the under 9 age group and in the following year taking part in the Open Karate Championship organized by SANKUKAI Sri Lanka he won Silvers in Kumite and Kata.

In the Second Open International Karate Championship he won Golds for Kumite and Kata and in the sixth GKF International Meet he won Golds for Kata and Kumite in the under 10 age group and in the 39th Karate Championship in 2015 organized by G. A. T. Livera Foundation he got a Bronze for Kumite and in 2016 Puttalam District 4th Karate Championship he won Golds for Kumite and Kata and in the National Kumite Championship he got the Best Performance award and was among the Best Eight and in the Traditional Funakoshi Shotokan First Karate Championship he got Bronzes for Kumite and Kata in 2016 he joined St. Joseph Vaz College and came under Karate Coach Randil Fernando.

In 2017as an under 13 competitor at the Puttalam District Meet he won a Gold for Kumite and a Silver for Kata and at the North Western Provincial Meet he got Golds for both Kata and Kumite and then in the Karate Nationals he came to the Best Eight. As an under 14 competitor he won a Gold for Kumite and a Bronze for Kata and in the 27th North Western Province Meet he got a Gold for Karate and Silver in Kata and at the National Championship in 2018 he came up to Best Eight and in the Sri Lanka Schools Meet he came up to Best Eight.

In the same year Champions Trophy Tournament he got a Silver for Kumite and in the Open World Karate Championship he got Silvers for Kata and Kumite and in the third Open Invitation Kumite Championship he won a Gold for Kumite and a Bronze for Kata and in the Puttalam District Meet he grabbed a Gold for Kumite and a Silver for Kata and in the All Isand Champions Trophy he won Silvers for Kumite and Kata In Athletics at the Inter House Sports Meet he won places in 300 metres Hurdles in 2017 and 2018 and 400x4 and 400x100 and his team came second. He participated in the John Tarbet Meet and came fifth in 400 metres and also he is a member of the College under 16 Swimming Team
