Former Sri Lankan Olympic athletic star Ranga Wimalawansa has started his own training academy with the intention of finding Sri Lanka’s future athletic stars.
The 41-year-old Sydney 2000 Olympic athlete is currently coaching a group of young athletes at the Sports Ministry Grounds in Torrington Avenue, through the courtesy of Ranga Wimalawansa Sports Foundation.
Wimalawansa has already obtained the IAAF Level One and Level Two Coaching certificates and has also followed a course on High-Performance Decision Making in Australia.
“My target is to build up a solid foundation for these young athletes and anyone could join these sessions because it is absolutely free of charge,” said the former schoolboy of St. Peter’s College.
“I am focussing more on the 100m, 200m, 400m and relay events and I hope to expand this programme to other areas as well,” added Wimalawansa.
Wimalawansa built up a reputation as one of the finest exponents in relay events and he proved it when he anchored the Sri Lanka 400X4m Relay Team to win the Bronze Medal at the 1998 Asian Championships in Japan while still a schoolboy.
He won a Bronze Medal in the 400m event at the 2002 Asian Championships and was a member of the Sri Lanka 400X4m Relay Team which won a Gold Medal at the 2006 South Asian Games. (C.D)
