CR, CH pulls out of Commander’s Cup Sevens

CR and FC and CH and FC yesterday decided to pull out from the Commander’s Cup Inter-Club Seven-A-Side Rugby Tournament scheduled to commence on March 21.

“We are not in a position of playing in the tournament as two of our players were tested positive for COVID-19. They have mingled with some of the other players at practices and as a result all of them have to undergo the quarantine process,” Udani Edirisignhe, Rugby Manager of CH and FC told the Daily News yesterday.

Meanwhile, President of CR and FC Ted Hiran Muttiah said: “the requirement for players to be in group isolation for a continuous period of 35 days put in jeopardy their full time jobs.”

He further added “In the current economic climate brought about by the pandemic, the CR Rugby Board decided that it is unfair to expect our Men’s and Women’s players to put at risk their livelihood, many of whom are sole breadwinners of their families. The club’s duty of caring for our players extends beyond the playing field.”

Muttiah concluded by saying “we hope the tournament will be conducted successfully with the blessing of Sri Lanka Rugby.”
