The Court of Appeal yesterday, issued notice to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on a petition filed by former cricketers, including spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan, Sidath Weetimuny, Michael Tissesa and nine other personalities in Sri Lanka.

The SLC Chairman, Executive Committee, and Sports Minister, Namal Rajapaksa have been noticed to appear before Court on March 15.

Member of the petition party Kushil Gunasekara who is also a former SLC Interim Committee Member said the petition calls on the Court to order the restructuring of the SLC and to change the existing voting structure.

“Today, we like-minded patriots have got together to seek legal redress to right the wrongs in the governance of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC),” said Gunasekera.

“We believe that the time has come to walk the talk. Not acting now during these dire times for our cricket, have been a dereliction of our collective duty.”

“Having considered the matter seriously, we have filed a Writ Petition at the Court of Appeal (CoA) of Sri Lanka seeking a new Constitution for the flawed governing body administering cricket in the country,” Gunasekera added.

They claim that the cricket administration of the country is severely impacted by political and other external factors under the existing Constitution.

The petitioners add that the situation should be changed before the next SLC election which is scheduled to be held on May 20.

The petition was filed by former Sri Lanka cricketers Muttiah Muralitharan, Sidath Wettimuny, Michael Tissera, Ana Punchihewa, Vijaya Malalasekara, Rienzie Wijetilleke, Kushil Gunasekera, Dinal Phillips, Justice Saleem Marsoof, Somasundram Skandakumar, Thilan Wijesinghe and Dr. Palitha Kohona.
