Sri Lanka’s ace spinner Lasith Embuldeniya believes that a target of over 200 runs could be a tough challenge for England in their second innings as the second Test is well poised for an exciting finish at the Galle Stadium.
England will resume the fourth day today, at 339 for nine, still trailing by 42 runs after Embuldeniya returned career-best figures of seven wickets for 132 during another marathon spell of 41 overs.
“The wicket is turning now, compared to day one and day two. If we can take early wickets in the morning and get a lead of 150 or 200, then we are in the game,” said Embuldeniya whose previous best figures were five for 66 against South Africa in his debut.
The 24-year-old left-arm spinner also said that he focused mainly on the line and length and tried to be physically and mentally strong throughout the innings.
“We have to be strong and have a strong mindset. I just focused on my line and length. It is a challenge because the wicket is on the slow side and so the batsmen tend to go back and play shots,” he stressed.
“What I can control is line and length. The pitch has started to wear and certainly took more spin and the batting conditions were tougher than the first two days,” he added.
