Sri Lanka will look to consolidate their position in the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Test Championship (WTC) Points Table when they take on South Africa in the second Test at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, commencing on Sunday.
Dimuth Karunaratne’s team is currently lying in fifth-place in the updated points table and they could still retain that position if they could emerge victorious and draw the series 1-1.
Sri Lanka of course, started the series with a tally of 91 points and with just a solitary point ahead of their rivals who were on 90 points.
But South Africa will move to 96 points and would leapfrog Sri Lanka if they could win the second Test as well and complete a 2-0 sweep over the visitors.
In fact, a 0-2 series defeat would push the Lankans further down in the points table and their fate will also depend on the outcome of the series between New Zealand and Pakistan which begins at Christchurch on the same day.
The Lankans could be pushed to the lowest as seventh position in the points table if Pakistan manages to win the second Test and force a 1-1 draw to their series.
However, the entire scenario would change and Sri Lanka will remain in the fifth-place if they could force a 1-1 draw to their series against South Africa.
Meanwhile, Australia are currently on top of the points table and their series against India is really crucial in deciding the two top teams. However, New Zealand are not far away from reaching the top and a 2-0 series win over Pakistan will give them a real chance of toppling both Australia and India.
