Sunil Senaweera was elected as the secretary of the Gampola Football League for the 26th consecutive year at its Annual General Meeting held at the Eden Park Reception Hall, Gampola last week in the presence of Anura De Silva, President of Sri Lanka Football and M.M. Rameez an ExCo member.

Sunil, is one of the long standing personnel, who has served the game of Football for several decades holding various positions both in his Leagues as well as at the governing body. He has been serving in this capacity uncontested since 1997, creating history becoming one of the officials to occupy a post so long.

Sunil, had his education at Gampola Zahira and played soccer in all age groups at college later represented Gampola United SC, Black Square SC, Colombo. In 1994, he made an initiative to form his own club Red Sun SC, Gampola. He was a former football Referee and officiated in 60 International matches before he was appointed as International Referees Inspector by AFC in 2002, after successfully completing the workshop followed by qualifying test.

He was ultimately promoted to serve as a match Commissioner by AFC in 2004 to coincide with the FIFA/AFC appointed him to officiate in 250 International Matches played in Asia, which is a great honour for the country. As match commissioner he officiated at the AFC Cup final in Syria

in 2005. Asian Youth Championship in Japan in 2007 followed by the Asian Under-17 Championship in Singapore in 2008. In the same year he was selected to officiate in the AFC Champions League final in Adelaide, Australia in the match between Adelaide United and Gamba Osaka, Japan. This was the first ever Champions League final where he became the first Sri Lankan to officiate in 2008. In the same year he was appointed as the Chairman, Best player selection committee by AFC. He was later promoted and became the only Sri Lanka to be nominated as best match commissioner in Asia by AFC in 2008 and 2009

respectively. He was also the only Sri Lankan to officiate in the FIFA world cup playoff finals as match commissioner in 2009 and 2013 in Jordan and Uzbekistan. In 2011, he was appointed for the Asia Cup final in Qatar followed in 2013 to officiate at the Asian Youth Cup Finals as Senior Match commissioner in Nanjing, China.

He then opted to get engaged in Football administration from 2000/01, where he was elected as Deputy Secretary of FFSL. Then from 2002 to 2004 as Secretary General FFSL, from 2005 to 2009 as Chairman Referees Committee FFSL and finally ended up serving as a Vice President from 2010 to 2014, before he was offered to officiate as the Sri Lanka National Soccer Team’s

Manager from 2018 to 2019. He also has a coaching license Obtained as a ‘*Class One’* Coach which was conducted by the Ministry of Sports in collaboration with German Football Association in 1983. Later he underwent the FIFA Coca Cola Coaching Course in 1988. He participated in the Olympic Solidarity coaching course conducted by IOC. He attended FIFA elite Coaching course in Hong Kong in 1991.He remained as the head coach of Crystal Palace FC in 2017 and the Technical Director of ‘THE TRAVELLER’ Youth Football Academy
