Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said yesterday that the government would not neglect the development of the country amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
He was speaking at the inauguration of the construction work for the new export goods terminal at the Bandaranaike International Airport.
The minister added that the government has restarted a number of development projects that were halted by the previous government. Ranatunga said that one of the main aims of the government is to revive the tourism industry which has been affected by the pandemic. Since the reopening of airports, over 500 tourists have applied for visas to visit the country, the minister added.
The estimated cost of the terminal is Rs.2.36 billion. It is expected to be completed within two years, the minister said.
He added that the building would comprise of security points, parking lots, stores, as well as electrical and information technology units.
It is also expected to provide cargo-handling services with a capacity of 150,000 metric tonnes per annum, Ranatunga added.
