A total of 56 athletes from seven disciplines will sign a historic contract under the purview of the Sports Ministry, between February 5 and 10 at the Sports Council Office in Torrington.

This was revealed by the Minister of Sports Namal Rajapaksa, at a ceremony held to introduce the ‘National High-Performance Strategy and Sports Tier System’ at the Duncan White Auditorium yesterday.

As an outcome they have shortlisted these athletes to get into an agreement which will enable them to concentrate their sporting disciplines without any hindrance under proper guidance through professional coaches.

At the outset this programme will focus on presenting athletes for the 2022 Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and Para Asian Games which currently looks as a herculean task.

Nevertheless, the determined councils are making all endeavours to reach success according to a plan which will be beneficial for both parties the athlete and the governing body.

Minister Namal Rajapaksa who has a vision to take Sri Lanka sports to the next level was delighted to make this initiate under the leadership of former National cricket captain Mahela Jayawardene.

“Some of the Politicians and heads of sport bodies will debate on various platforms for their benefits and agendas, where they don’t have a proper system in supporting the athletes and developing the sports. I am the Sports Minister and will not interfere in any of the sports bodies in their activities.”

“But, I have vested my trust on the sports council which will attend to all matters pertaining to that particular sport. If any further matter arises I will look on to that” said Minister Rajapaksa.

“We know that certain sports bodies along with the NOC are obtaining financial assistance from their world governing bodies, which should be utilised for the development of the sport.”

“But some of them are not properly utilised. We will query the accounts in the future and take necessary action against them.” Minister further added.
