Dimuth Karunaratne

Sri Lankan skipper Dimuth Karunartane climbed two positions becoming the first Sri Lankan player to be within the first 15 players in the latest International Cricket Council(ICC)Test Rankings for batsmen released yesterday.

Dimuth after his fighting knock of 103 runs in the second innings against South Africa at the second test at the Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg, went up in the rankings with 673 points and subsequently became the first Sri Lankan batsman to achieve this feat. Dimuth has played in 132 innings off 68 test matches and has scored 4657 runs with an average of 36.66.

His batting career comprises ten centuries and 24 half centuries with a highest score of 196 runs scored against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates in 2017 in a ‘Pink ball test series’.

The 32-year old Dimuth made his test debut against New Zealand at the Galle International Cricket Stadium where he was dismissed for a duck in the first innings but went on to score an unbeaten 60 to guide his side to a ten wicket victory.

Meanwhile, Kane Williamson, the New Zealand captain who is in prime form scoring several centuries against the touring Pakistan team heads the fray with 919 points.

Another prolific batsman Steve Smith of Australia occupies the second place with 900 points while Virat Kohli, the India skipper with 870 points remains in the third position.

The other unique feature of this ranking is that there are three New Zealanders apart from Williamson, two Australians apart from Smith and two more players from India apart from Kohli. Ben Stokes of England who is currently in the sixth position with 760 points has another Englishman while there are two players from South Africa and Pakistan player Babar Azam remains the only player from his country in top 16 players list.
