Dickoya Maskeliya Cricket Club which was a force to be reckoned in the past is hoping to participate in rugby once again, with the blessings of Sri Lanka Rugby.
The club’s first official rugby match was played on 7 March 1880 against fellow Up Country club, DimbulaAthletic and Cricket Club,at its home ground in Darawella, with Dickoya winning 9–3. They played the return fixture in the following week at Radella, where Dimbula A and CC were victorious 3–nil. Dickoya first entered the Clifford Cup Final in 1958..
In the past Dickoya produced great teams and players, and twice entered the Clifford Cup Finals and went down to CR & FC and Havelock SC in 1958 and 1961. Dickoya MCC in 1961 was led by M.G.K. Macpherson,the man who led the Kandy SC in 1955 cup final and Dimbulla A & CC in 1959 went down to Dr. Hubert Aloysius Havelock SC team in the final seconds of the game, due to a penalty.
Some of the top products of this club were Barry Cameron, Tony Johnson,Chris Bean, Lionel Almeida, Uvais Odayar, , Mohan”Baila” Samarasinghe, David. Bretherton, Dharrmasiri Madugalle, RohanAbeyasundara, C., Hanies, J.M.E. Warning, Mohan Samarakoon, Iswan Omar, Irwin Howie, C.D.Gibon, Lanil Tennakoon. Ranga Gunasekara, Mohan Ganapathy, Mahen Madugalle, Tony Perera, Dushy Perera, Tariq Omar, Dilakshan Ratwatte, Dushan Ratwatte, Rohan Edwards, Sumedha Ratwatte, Suresh Navaratnam, Rajiv Bandaranayake and Chanake Herath . The 1961 Dickoya Cup final team was packed with whites and the four Sri Lankans who played in the cup final were T.B. Pilapitiya, RohanWijenayake, B.I.Gunawardene and Uvais Odayar.
