Veteran athletes who are engaged in competitive sports were felicitated as a part of World Elders’ Day celebrations in Sri Lanka at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute recently. The event was organised by the Director General of Elders’ Secretariat Chandana Ranaweeraarchchi and his staff.

Health Minister Pavithradevi Wanniarachchi was the chief guest at the ceremony.

Wife of the oldest living active athlete couple, K. G. G. Menike of Kuruwita, Ratnapura who is 72 years old too was felicitated during the ceremony.

Her husband R. A. Chandradasa who is 82 years old was also considered for awards, but had to be sidelined to avoid giving two awards to the same family.

Menike and Chandradasa boast of a star studded athletic career spanning over 50 years and have brought honour to the country in many international meets.

The couple has a sports museum housed in their residence named ‘Javana Sports Museum’ where awards, medals and memorabilia they received in their athletic careers are showcased.

It is considered the only sports museum in the country and plans were made several times to shift the museum to its own place after recognized it as a museum with national importance, but still it has not become a reality.

The couple’s only hope is to see the museum being shifted to the new place before they die. (AA)
