Ton-up Laurie Evans steers Colombo Kings to easy win

Laurie Evans celebrates his century

Colombo Kings further underlined their supremacy when they outplayed the Jaffna Stallions by six-runs in their Lanka Premier League (LPL) T20 Cricket Tournament second-round match played at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Hambantota yesterday.

The match was of course of academic interest as both teams have already qualified to play in next week’s semi-final of this inaugural franchise-based tournament.

The Kings put up a powerful batting display to rattle-up 173 for four and then restricted their opponents to 167 for six, despite some useful contributions from Tom Moores (23), Charith Asalanka (32), Shoaib Malik (29) and Thisara Perera (22).

Andre Russell was the most successful bowler for the Kings with excellent figures of three for 46 in four overs.

Earlier, Laurie Evans hammered the first century of the tournament to help the Kings pile-up a formidable 173 for four wickets from their 20 overs after they were put into bat.

The 33-year-old aggressive right-hand opening batsman carried his bat until the end and struck an unbeaten 108 from 56 deliveries with the aid of five sixes and nine boundaries.

The former Surrey, Sussex and Warwickshire batsman played the sheet anchor role after his team had lost the more consistent Dinesh Chandimal in the fourth over of the innings.

Despite the fall of wickets at regular intervals from the other end, Evans played his natural game and raced to his half-century from just 34 balls studded with one six and six boundaries.

He continued with the good work and powered his way to a 60-ball century with the help of five sixes and eight boundaries. He also figured in a half-century stand for the third-wicket along with Skipper Angelo Mathews.

But apart from that, the only other significant contribution came from all-rounder, Andre Russell who provided some momentum to the innings during the latter stages with a 14-ball 21 inclusive of one six and two boundaries.

Chief scores:

Colombo Kings: 173/4 in 20 overs (Laurie Evans 108, Andre Russell 21)

Jaffna Stallions: 167/6 in 20 overs (Tom Moores 23, Charith Asalanka 32, Shoaib Malik 29, Thisara Perera 22, Andre Russell 3/46).
