Sokian Ramesh excellent display in LPL Tournament

Ramesh Mendis in action for Dambulla Viiking in the Lanka Premier League tournament

Twenty five year old, Sokian Wanigamuni Ramesh Tharinda Mendis graduated successfully from school level to club level. Ramesh Mendis (Dambulla Viiking) gave fine all round performances in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) tournament at MRICS, Hambantota. He scored 49 runs in three innings and claimed six wickets for 120 runs. He was the second best emerging player in the LPL tournament.

Ramesh Mendis was born on 7th July of 1995 at Ambalangoda. He was admitted to Sri Devananda College Amablangoda in 2001. He started Cricket at Sri Devananda College Ambalangoda under the guidance of coach K. Suraj Sanjeewa in 2006. Ramesh represented the school under 13 teams in 2006, 2007 and 2008 in Sri Devananda College Ambalangoda.

He scored more than 200 runs and claimed more than 30 wickets with a hat=trick in the under 13 season in 2006. He claimed a hat trick against S. Thomas’ College Mt. Lavinia. He claimed more than 25 wickets and scored over 200 runs with three fifties in the season of 2007. He scored 250 runs with 3 fifties and claimed 30 wickets as skipper in the under 13 season in 2008.

Ramesh joined Dharmasoka College Ambalangoda in 2009. He scored more than 200 runs with 3 fifties and claimed more than 20 wickets in the under 15 season in 2009 under the coach and master in charge Viraj Chaminda. He represented the Galle district and Southern province team in the Prima Trophy under 15 inter district and inter provincial tournament conducted by

Sri Lanka Cricket. He represented the college first XI team as a fresher in the season of 2009/10 under the coach P. Milton. He scored more than 200 runs and claimed 62 wickets in the under 19 Cricket season.

Ramesh represented Sri Lanka Schools under 15 tour of Malaysia under the skipper Kusal Mendis in 2010. He scored more than 250 runs with 3 fifties and claimed over 20 wickets in the under 15 season in 2010. He scored more than 550 runs with 4 fifties and claimed over 44 wickets in the under 19 tournament in 2010/11. Ramesh scored more than 200 runs with 2 half centuries and claimed over 20 wickets in the under 17 school tournament in 2011. He scored more than 600 runs with 3 fifties and claimed over 53 wickets in the under 19 tournament in 2011/12. He was adjudged man of the match in the annual big match in 2012.

He was the second best batsman in the under 17 tournament in 2012. He scored more than 500 runs with two centuries against Vidyaloka College and D.S. Senanayake College Colombo. He scored more than 550 runs with 4 fifties and claimed 98 wickets in the under 19 tournament in 2012/13. He was adjudged best bowler and best schoolboy runner up at the “Sunday Observer - Mobitel school Cricket Awards” in 2012-2013.

Ramesh scored more than 800 runs with a double century against Revatha Balapitiya and three centuries against Gurukula Kelaniya, Dharmaraja Kandy and Thurstan Colombo and claimed 63 wickets in eight matches in the first XI season 2013/2014 as the skipper. He was adjudged best all-rounder and best schoolboy runner up at the “Sunday Observer - Mobitel school Cricket Awards” in 2013-2014.

He scored over 2800 runs with a double century and three centuries and claimed 314 wickets in five first XI seasons. He was awarded best school Cricket player of the year in 2014 at Sirasa Platinum Award.

Ramesh represented Sri Lanka under 19 team in 2013 and 2014. He played against Bangladesh, India, Asia Cup, Australia and Youth World Cup in 2014. He claimed 16 wickets in nine youth ODI matches. His best bowling performance was 5 for 43 against Bangladesh under 19’s. He claimed 5 wickets in two youth tests.

Schoolboy Ramesh played for Singha SC in the Sara trophy tournament and under 23 tournament in 2011 and 2012. He made two centuries for Singha SC against Galle CC and Sri Lanka Ports Authority CC. He represented SSC,under 23, Bloomfield C & AC, Moors SC Emerging and Moors SC in the Premier Cricket so far. He scored 2413 runs with a triple century, four centuries and 11 half centuries and claimed 80 wickets in 44 Three day matches so far.

His best batting performance was 300 runs against Negombo CC last season (2020). He scored 995 runs with three centuries and six half centuries and claimed 40 wickets in 15 under 23 premier matches.

Ramesh represented Teejay, Dimo and Sri Lanka Telecom in Mercantile Cricket. Ramesh represented Saegis Campus and Foundation of Goodness for Red Bull Cricket. Ramesh represented Colombo Commandos, Team Kandy, Team Colombo, Southern Province U23 and Team Dambulla. He represented Sri Lanka Emerging and Sri Lanka A. Ramesh represented Dambulla Viiking in LPL tournament. Ramesh showed all-round performances for Sri Lanka A and Sri Lanka Emerging.
