Nethuli, a budding karateka with great potential

Ten-year-old karateka Kiridenagedara Nethuli Ovindya Chandrapala has brought honour and fame in karate to her Alma Mater, the Primary School Napokuna, Katugampola and she will be moving to Sandalankawa National School next year as she has been successful at the 2020 Grade five scholarship examination. It will be a loss to her old school and gain for Sandalankawa Central College.

Nethuli was admitted to the Primary School of Napokuna and the then principal was Chinthka Rathnasuriya. Her first class teacher was Mrs. Champika Weragala. In 2015 the principal of the school Mr. Rathnasuriya who is also the Prefect of Games introduced Karate to the school and he appointed Ex-Army karateka and former Army karate coach Sugath Kumara as their coach. At the age of six Nethuli commenced Karate under him and started with Kumite and attended for practices.

In 2018 as an under eight competitor she participated in Dakimoto Yoso Cup and won a gold medal at her first attempt. Then in 2019 participating at the Totaka – Do – Association Ragama meet in the under nine age group she won a gold medal in Kata and a silver medal in Kumite. In the same year participating in the same age group at the Gaetono Pisano Open International Karate Championship she won a gold medal in Kata and in the same year at the Sri Lanka Friends Karate Open Championship under 8/9 category, she won a gold medals in Kumite and Kata. In the Sri Lanka Karate Do Federation meet competing in the under nine category she won a gold medal in Kumite and bronze in Kata. Sri Lanka Karate-Do Federation of North Western Province organized a karate meet in 2019 and participating in the under 9 age group she won silver medals in Kumite and Kata.

Nethuli clinched a gold medal in kata at the 2020 Sada Ambassador of Karate Championship where 169 karatekas competed and was selected for Sri Lanka Karate Do Federation National Pool with her impressive performance.

She is well supported by her school principal Mr. Rathnasuriya and the members of the tutorial staff and also her parents Madawa Rukshan Chandrapala and Mrs. Madusha Shiromi. Nethuli will bid adios to her old school Napokuna Primary of Katugampola with an unblemished record by winning six goals in Karate with in a short span of four years.
