Injury-hit Lanka degrades du Plessis to 199-club

Francois du Plessis reacts after being dismissed for 199

A depleted Sri Lankan outfit had the satisfaction of dismissing a batsman for 199 runs for the second time in the history of Test cricket during the opening match of the series against South Africa at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on Monday.

The Sri Lankans denied the former South African Captain, Francois du Plessis, from reaching his maiden Test double-hundred after having faced 276 deliveries in the first innings on the third day of the match.

And quite appropriately, that honour of dismissing the batsman just one-run away from the milestone went to the Test dubutant, Wanindu Hasaranga who completed figures of four wickets for 171 from a marathon spell of 45 overs.

This is the second time that Sri Lanka had dismissed a batsman for an agonising 199 in a Test match with the first occasion been way back in 1986 against India in the first of three Test matches played at Kanpur.

On that occasion the victim was India’s middle-order batsman, Mohammad Azharuddin who was trapped leg-before wicket by Sri Lankan fast bowler, Ravi Ratnayake after the batsman had occupied the crease for more than eight hours.

Overall, du Plessis became the 11th player to be dismissed for 199 in a Test match and the second South African batsman to fall into that category after Dean Elgar, who was also out for 199 against Bangladesh at Potchefstroom in 2017.

Pakistan’s opening batsman, Mudassar Nazar of course, had the honour of becoming the first batsman to be out for 199 in the second Test match against India at Faizalabad in October, 1984.

Former Sri Lanka opening batsman, Sanath Jayasuriya also had the ignominy of falling for 199 runs in a Test match against India at the SSC Grounds in Maitland Place.

Jayasuriya was dismissed by fast bowler, Abey Kuruvilla in the second innings of the second-Test during the 1997 series after having maintained a strike-rate of 88.05.

Australia’s Matthew Elliott, Steve Waugh and Steve Smith and Younis Khan (Pakistan), Ian Bell (England), and Lokesh Rahul (India) are the other batsmen who belong to the small of club of batsmen to be dismissed on 199.
