Dambulla end Colombo’s unbeaten run in LPL

Dambulla Viiking brought an end to Colombo Kings’ unbeaten run with a stunning 28-run victory in their Lanka Premier League T20 Cricket Tournament match played at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Hambantota yesterday.

After piling up a formidable 175 for nine, Viiking produced probably their best bowling performance of the tournament to dismiss their opponents for 147 in 18.4 overs.

Opener Laurie Evans hit a top score of 59 from 33 balls with the help of four sixes and five boundaries.

But the rest of the batting collapsed against some accurate bowling from Samit Patel (2/30), Malinda Pushpakumara (2/19) and Pulina Tharanga (2/31).

Earlier, Dambulla Viiking rallied around through their middle order batsmen to reach a competitive total after they had won the toss and elected to bat first.

Their innings was built around a fighting half century from Skipper Dasun Shanaka who hit a top score of 56 from 34 deliveries inclusive of four sixes and three boundaries.

The 29-year-old right-hander walked into the middle at a vital stage of the innings when the Viiking had lost three wickets just before the halfway stage.

The dynamic all-rounder then took control of the situation and hammered the bowlers to all parts of the ground before racing to his fifty in 32 deliveries with the aid of three sixes and three boundaries. The Viiking of course had a very poor start to the innings as they lost both openers, Niroshan Dickwella and Paul Stirling with just three runs on the board.

However, Upul Tharanga and Samit Patel revived the Viiking innings with a third-wicket stand of 71 runs from six overs. Both batsmen departed in the space of two overs before Shanaka produced his fireworks with the support of Angelo Perera.

Isuru Udana (3/25), Dushmantha Chameera (2/27) and Andre Russell (3/18) took the bowling honours for the Kings.

Chief scores:

Dambulla Viiking: 175/9 in 20 overs (Upul Tharanga 25, Samit Patel 30, Dasun Shanaka 56, Angelo Perera 21, Isuru Udana 3/25, Dushmantha Chameera 2/27, Andre Russell 3/18)

Colombo Kings: 147 in 18.4 overs (Laurie Evans 59, Samit Patel 2/30, Malinda Pushpakumara 2/19, Pulina Tharanga 2/31).
