Dale Steyn backs Kandy Tuskers to reach LPL semis

Dale Steyn

Former, South African paceman, Dale Steyn is optimistic that the Kandy Tuskers could reach the semi-finals of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) T20 Cricket Tournament.

The 37-year-old veteran fast bowler is set to spearhead the Tuskers’ bowling attack when they take on the Jaffna Stallions, in a second-round fixture at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Hambantota today, commencing at 3.30 p.m.

The Tuskers are currently at the bottom of the points table and are battling for a semi-final spot along with the Galle Gladiators with both teams having recorded one win each.

“We got two more games left and if we win those two then we go through to the semi-finals,” Steyn who will make his LPL debut against the Stallions revealed yesterday.

“And if we win those two we will get some momentum on our back. Thereafter, you never know, and so we are holding our thumbs that we could put it together,” he added.

Steyn who retired from international cricket last year believed that T20 cricket is a highly demanding game and need to be one hundred percent fit.

“When you play in Test matches, you maintain a fitness level just by playing five days of cricket whereas, when you are playing only T20 cricket it become a little bit harder.” “I have had some great mentors in the past, like Jacques Kallis and Mark Boucher and these players have now got older.”

“They have always told me that you got to work on your fitness level and it is something everyone has to do eventually,” Steyn explained.

Steyn also commended the LPL for producing some high-class T20 cricket overall and is anxious to make his first appearance of the tournament. “My stay in Sri Lanka has been very good and I have been under quarantine for the last couple of days. I had a good football game the other day and had a good workout before the official practice session. I am quite excited to be part of this tournament.”

“Cricket has been competitive and there are some big names here, and from what I watched on TV, it looks like there is lot of fun too, so I cannot wait to get out and play,” he added.
