Super League to bring professionalism to Lankan soccer - Jaswar Umar

The eagerly awaited football extravaganza, the inaugural Professional Football League (the “Super League”) has already created ripples in the Sri Lankan sports industry. Ten selected clubs will participate and they are already vying with each other to secure the best players and coaches by offering attractive rates.

FFSL General Secretary Jaswar Umar said this is the first time in football history the players and coaches are offered high value for playing in the teams.

“Super League has already changed the way football is being perceived and I am happy that an unbelievable amount of investments is being made by the participating clubs even before a ball is kicked,” said Jaswar Umar proudly.

Super League is the ultimate football entertainment industry in the making, similar to many professional leagues in the world. Already ten top clubs have been selected through a long process and are now gearing to strengthen their outfits to face the competition.

November 20 is the first kick off planned and FFSL is working extremely hard with a dedicated department to stage the event in a highly colourful way.

Super League concept was created bearing in mind this is not just another competition, but as a prominent football industry where footballers are offered employment to play football as full time jobs. Already more than 300 jobs are being created through this new industry, while indirect business opportunities are created for many small-time businesses and traders, like food and beverage, sports apparels, transport, hospitality and security services.

Super League creates new opportunities for entrepreneurs in many different areas, including professional services, that never existed in the sports industry. Since football entertainment runs every weekend from Friday to Sunday for a seven-month long period, this is to become the longest and most entertaining sporting event in the country.

With ten teams playing in a home and away format, the total number of matches totals 90 in 18 stages. All matches will be played at Sugathadasa Stadium and expected to be live streamed through web or television.

This is considered to be the elite sporting event in the country and FFSL is negotiating with well reputed brands to be the title sponsor for this prestigious event. Minister of Sports Namal Rajapaksa has given his fullest support and wants to ensure this masterpiece of football is kicked off in a grand style.

Many corporates are in negotiation with Super League organizers to be part of this prestigious sporting event. Jaswar Umar says Super League is a game changer in football history that will change the future of football in the country. This has already become an industry and FFSL will develop this to a superior sporting brand in the coming years that can challenge the South Asian region in many ways.
