CPCA out to promote cricket in Kandy

The Central Province Cricket Association headed by Sarath Ekanayake is determined to put the game of cricket on the correct path. When he was Chief Minister he gave his maximum support for all sports, During his schooldays he was a fine Elle player. He was elected president of Central Province Cricket Association in 2016 and is all out to put things in order and promote cricket .

The Kandy clubs should be looked after. This is one of the most neglected areas when it comes to cricket.Everyone is expecting Sarath Ekanayake who did a lot for basketball at local and national level, and is a great sports promoter, to score for the game and put things in order. Sarath Ekanayake was at one time president of one of the oldest cricket playing clubs in the country Kandy Cricket Club in 2016-17 Vice Presidents: R. Weerasinghe, T. Jayasinghe, H. Marikar, S. Jayasundara, S.Godaliyadda, Secretary: J. Pathirana, Assistant Secretary: P. Walalawala,Treasurer C. Girihagama, Asst Treasurer: M Azary, Cricket Secretary: C. Girihagama, Committee: S. Fernando, S. Peries,A. Jayasinghe, S. Wickramaarachchi, D. Bandara, S. Perera,S. Dissanayake, S. Silva, L. Panditharatne and C.N Dissanayake.

Kandy Cricket Club was formed in1970’s due to Kandy SC failing to play a match on the due date and they were suspended from cricket. Then some keen cricket promoters who were with the club like Mervin Berenger, Bertie Gomes, M.E. Marikar, ArhturAlwis, Dr. C.D.L Fernando changed the name to Kandy Cricket Club and continued the game, that is how Kandy CC came into the game.

Today in Kandy schools and clubs are finding it extremely difficult to keep the sport going. One reason is that there are no proper grounds. Sarath Ekanayake is all out to help in this matter. He studied in three schools and ended up at St. Anthony’s College Wattala, and had his higher education at Oslo University,Norway.
