Sri Lankan Olympians living in the country were felicitated yesterday at the Duncan White Auditorium of the Sports Ministry . The Olympians were presented with an insurance scheme through the courtesy of Alliance Insurance.
The Sports Minister Dullas Alahapperuma who was the Chief Guest on this occasion said today the attitude of the sportmen has changed and everyone wanted to win at any cost . I always consider Olympic sport is not only a platform for the athletes but also a good place to display their human qualities. Normally winning or losing is part of sports but today it has changed to a must win situation .Especially Sri Lankan Olympians have joined hands with Alliance Insurance to provide them with an Insurance scheme and that is a great effort especially without any support from the Government
From 1948 t0 2016 Olympics 96 athletes represented Sri Lanka. Today 67 Olympians are living while 20 athletes have passed away. Altogether, a total of 47 Olympians living in Sri Lanka were felicitated at this ceremony which was held under the patronage of Sports Minister, Dullas Alahapperuma. Former Olympic boxer DIG Sumith Liyanage (84) the oldest living Olympian also took part at the felicitation ceremony Some of the other veteran Olympians who were felicitated on Wednesday with Insurance scheme are W.Wimaladasa A. Premachandra and Wimalasena Perera Sri Lankan Olympians Association President Sriyani Kulawansa, it’s Secretary Damayanthi Dharsha , Sports Ministry Secretary K.D.S Ruwanchandra and Sports Director General Amal Edirisuriya and senior officials of the Alliance Insurance also graced this occasion.
