Cricket lovers in Sri Lanka are appealing to the authorities to rename the Kandy Pallekele cricket stadium in honour of cricket legend, Muttiah Muralitharan. Every Sri Lankan should be proud of their former Test Cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan who was the World’s highest Test-wicket taker who has been named as the most valuable Test player of the 21st Century by the Wisden Cricket Monthly.
This makes it more appropriate for our Country to honour Muttiah Muralitharan by naming the Pallekelle International Cricket Stadium as the Muttiah Muralitharan International Cricket Stadium as requested by the cricket fans of the country on several occasions.
Earlier this idea was mooted by Erik Weerawardena, former Private Secretary of President Maithripala Sirisena in a letter addressed to the then Sports Minister, Dayasiri Jayasekera on December 21,2016.
Even the father of Muthiah Muralitharan, S. Muththiah has requested this from the former President, Maithripala Sirisena through a letter sent by him on January 3,2017. A similar letter relevant to this was sent by D.M.Swaminathan, former Minister of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Re-settlement & Religious Affairs to the former Minister of Sports on September 17,2017.
Muralitharan is a Legend who was a product of St. Anthonys’ College, Katugastota who claimed a record 800 Test wickets representing Sri Lanka in 133 Test matches. In addition he played in 350 ODIs claiming 534 wickets. Cricket lovers all over the Island will always appreciate the service done to the Country by Muththiah Muralitharan and no sports loving person will object to naming the
Pallekelle International Cricket Stadium in his name.
