Mahesh Weerasinghe to continue as president of Kandy Sports Club

Every rugby lover in Kandy is thrilled to hear, that Mahesh Weerasinghe is tipped to be president for the third time in a row of the defending rugby league champions Kandy Sports Club. He will be named president at the 146th AGM which will take place on July 25 at the Nittawela club.

Mahesh is the son of former Kandy SCteam manager, committee member and Vice president late William “Gal”Weerasinghe; he too is a product of Dharmaraja College and gave a helping hand to sports like rugby, football, hockey, Volleyball and cricket

Mahesh Weerasinghe, a product of Dharmaraja College should continue his good work like what he did in the past. His main aim will be to give the best for the game and see his club doing well in the next season. Under his presidency last season Kandy SCwon the league but the knockouts were called off due to coronavirus.

Kandy SC is a club with a long and proud history. This Club took 42 years to win a major trophy and has become an invincible force in the rugby field thereby destroying the dominance of Colombo based clubs; today this club has won the highest number of championships in the league and knockouts since 1992

Mahesh was a good sportsman during his school days, represented cricket team as an outstanding all-rounder in the 1980’s.

He also played rugby as a flank forward, from 1980 to 1982 during which time he played in all the matches. In 1984 he joined Kandy Sports Club played sa flank forward.

After his retirement as a player, he undertook a range of administrative roles in the game, including being committee member, Secretary,Vice President and President from 2018 to date.

He was also one of the influential figures in the last two seasons and he is well known to the rugby lovers.

Now everyone at the Club is thrilled that Mahesh will be presiding over Kandy SC in the next season which promises to be an exciting season with some top class players.

Mahesh is also a a lover of the motor sports and has taken part in many motor races, like speed hill climb, road race, and has won many t imes, and is also a good Push Bike Racer.

He has served as a committee member of the Up-Country Motor Sports Club and Senkadagala Motor Sports Club
