Kesara Nuwantha an excellent all rounder

Withanawasam Kesara Nuwantha is a fifth year player and the captain of the first eleven cricket team of St. Servatius College, Matara. He is an all rounder who bats right hand and bowls off spin and a middle order batsman and a safe fielder in any position with a good arm.

Under his leadership Matara lads played eleven matches winning two outright, four on first innings and lost three outright and lost two on first innings. Kesara was encouraged to play cricket by his elder brother Thamesh Nuwantha.

His first year in the under 19 was 2015/16 as an under 15 player and he played only in nine matches in that season and he could not play for the Big Match or the Limited Over Game against their arch rivals Matara Thomians. How ever he played in three Big Matches and three One Dayers in 2017, 2018 and 2019 and this year he is looking forward for this years two big events which were postponed due to CoronaVirus.

This season Kesara scored 570 runs with six fifties and a top score of 72 against Trinity College, Kandy. In 2018/19 he collected 436 runs with six half centuries and in the previous year he scored 636 runs with 6 fifties and in 2016/17 436 runs and claimed 64 wickets with 9 for 128 against Maris Stella and up to now he has scored 2401 runs.

In his first year in the under 15 played in nine matches and scored 320 runs but he could not gain a place in the Big Match and the Limited Over Game. In the year 2018 he was the captain of the Matara District Team and in the same year he was selected for the Provincial Squad. In 2017/18 he played for the Big Match and got two fifties in both innings and earned Best Batsman Award in the One Dayer and carried away the Best Bowlers Prize too. His coaches from time to time in the first eleven were Lasith Suwandarathne, T. D. Munasinghe and presently Hiran Gunawardene and his Master in Charge was Dayananda Silva. Also he played for Ports Authority in the under 23 team and a member of the Provincial Squad of Galle Team. His dream of leading his Alma Mater in this years Big Match and the Limited Over is in the balance due to the prevailing situation in the country.

He commenced his cricket career in the under 13 in 2011 and he was sele cted for the division one team under Priyantha Abeysekera and he continued upto under 17. He played in the under 13 team for three successive years and in his final year in 2013 he scored 336 runs and claimed 15 wickets. In his first year in the under 15 he could not perform well. But in 2015 he scored 436 runs with a century against S. Thomas and claimed 23 wickets. He was selected to the District Team for the Prima Cup and played for the Provincial Team of Southern Province and they clinched the Trophy and he carried away the Best Bowlers and Man of the Match Awards in the final game.

In his second year in the under 17 they emerged as the all island champions and he scored 435 runs and claimed 36 scalps. His Parents Suminda Mendis, Ruchira Palliyaguru and Sanath Jayasuriya helped his Alma Mater and him to come up the ladder along with the guidance of the Principal and Master in Charge of cricket.
